The False Doctrine of Eternal Security

The once saved always saved came from the reformer John Calvin who first taught it in the mid fifteen hundreds. It is from this teaching that we have Eternal Security of the believer, or once saved always saved, or once a son or a daughter always a son or daughter. In Calvin’s view, man, who is corrupt was confronted by the omnipotent, (all powerful) and omnipresent (present everywhere) God before the world began and predestined some for eternal salvation (the elect) while others would suffer everlasting damnation.

John Calvin said, “We call predestination God’s eternal decree, by which he determined what he willed to become to each man. For all are not created in equal condition; rather, eternal life is ordained for some, eternal damnation for others.”

One preacher said’ who believes in once saved always saved, “We take the position that a Christian’s sins do not damn his soul. The way a Christian lives, what he says, his character, his conduct, or his attitude toward other people have nothing whatsoever to do with the salvation of his soul and all the sins he may commit from murder to idolatry will not make his soul in any more danger.”

The doctrine of Calvinism Is summed up as follows

  1. Salvation is entirely of God, you cannot seek it or obtain it.
  2. God has predestined certain individuals to salvation.
  3. Christ only died for the elect.
  4. Can never be lost, Once Saved Always Saved

This doctrine teaches that you cannot lose your salvation.

A couple of scriptures that are used to attempt to prove this are:

Joh 10:28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Joh 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. .

Gal 5:19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Gal 5:20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Gal 5:21  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

1Co 15:1  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

1Co 15:2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

  • You stand because of the gospel
  • You are saved because of the gospel
  • If you keep in memory: kat-ekh’-o

From G2596 and G2192; to hold down (fast), in various applications (literally or figuratively): – have, hold (fast), keep (in memory), let, X make toward, possess, retain, seize on, stay, take, withhold.

Php 2:12  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling

He exhorts them to diligence and seriousness in the Christian course. Work out your own salvation. It is the salvation of our souls (1Pe_1:9),

and our eternal salvation (Heb_5:9),

  • We are required to work out our salvation, katergazesthe. The word signifies working thoroughly at a thing and taking true pains.
  • We must be diligent in the use of all the means which conduce to our salvation.
  • We must not only work at our salvation, by doing something now and then about it; but we must work out our salvation, by doing all that is to be done, and persevering therein to the end. Salvation is the great thing we should mind and set our hearts upon, and we cannot attain salvation without the utmost care and diligence.

Mat 25:8  And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. Mat 25:9  But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. Mat 25:10  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Mat 25:11  Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. Mat 25:12  But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

1Co 3:16  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are

  • Temple of God

1Co 5:5  To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1Co 10:5  But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

1Co 10:6  Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

1Co 10:7  Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Jud 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

  • To fight for the faith, Work at it

pis’-tis

From G3982; persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession; by extension the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself: – assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.

Jas 1:15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Rom 6:15  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Rom 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Rom 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Rom 6:18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Jas_1:21  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Luk_21:19  In your patience possess ye your souls.
